Amos Wako Profile

Amos Wako was born on 31st July 1945, a lawyer by profession and the former Attorney General of the Republic of Kenya. He was the first senator from the Busia County in the Western province (Kenya) form the year 2013 to 2017.

He won the senatorial seat on an Orange Democratic Movement, whose leaders was the former Prime Minister of Kenya Raila Odinga.

Amos Wako received his education at Kakamega School and the Alliance High School. He completed his Bachelors of Science at the University of Landon, a Bachelors of Laws at the University of Dar Es Salaam and Master’s Degree in Laws at the University of Landon.

While at the University of Dar Es Salaam, Amos Wako was recognized and awarded as one the best student who had performed well during his years at the University.

Since he earned his degrees, Amos Wako has served in different professional organizations such as being the first Secretary General of the Inter-Union of Lawyers and the Secretary-General of the African Bar Association (1978-1980).

Between the years 1985 and 1992, he was the member of the United Nations Human Rights Committee and the LSK chairman. Between the years 1965 to 1991, he was working for Kaplan and Stratton before he was appointed to the position of the Attorney General.  At the University of Nairobi, he is a member of the Faculty Board of Law.

Amos Wako Family

Amos Wako was a happily married man to the first wife, Flora Ngaiya, with whom they were blessed with two children, Julius and Debora.  Julius has taken his father’s image a specialized lawyer in banking and finance matters.

Later on in the year 1997, he met and fell in love with Philomena Mwilu, Wako’s de facto second wife. The two although they are not formally married, have been faithful to each other.

Amos Wako’s first wife Flora Ngaira came from a powerful and wealthy family. Her father was the first African Deputy Chair of the public service commission. Flora is a Luhya from the Western region of Kenya, and during their marriage, they were blessed with two children.

The other wife, who is known as the de facto the second wife of Amos Wako, is Justice Philomena Mwilu, a prominent lawyer in Kenya who has served in different influential High Court and Supreme Court positions.

Justice Philomena is known as Wako’s de facto second wife. Their relationship began long time and they both had children when they met. Wako had two children while Mwilu had three children and have been together since then, despite the heavy criticism by some Kenyans.

In the last Kenyan Presidential petition that led to the nullification of October 8th, 2017 general election, many people wanted Mwilu to be disqualified from hearing the appeal due to their relationship with the ODM Senator, his husband.

At one point, it was believed that their relationship could result in a unfair ruling in favor of the ODM party (one of the critical party of NASA) that presented the petition.
